Cemetery Monument

please be patient for the page to download!

I came up with the idea for this project just last week!  Don't know what to do with all of those extra pizza boxes?  Check this out!

Materials needed:

Duct tape

Cardboard sheets

scissors

Acrylic adhesive

compound spatula

Grey Spray Primer

White Spray Paint

Green Spray Paint

Fine Sandpaper

Dead leaves, grass and vines (optional)

Step One

Starting out with Cardboard It doesn't matter where you get the cardboard sheets from, I used a few pizza boxes!

Cut out the pattern for the sides.

Note: Cut all four sheets together as to

maintain a uniform shape.

Step Two

Begin to tape the sides of the monument together.

Note: Tape both sides of the seam!

Fold all sides untill the monument stands, then tape the final section together inside and out.

Step Three

Duct tape all the sides. Make sure to put the strips of tape evenly and cover the entire base of the monument.

Step Four

Place the base of the monument on a sheet of cardboard and trace the base section and cut the shape out. Do the same thing for the top of the monument and set the pieces aside.

Step Five

Begin to overlap the cardboard strips into a cross shape. Over lap each piece untill cross is about 1/2" thick.

Wrap a piece of duct tape around each part of the cross to hold it together while taping the rest of it.

Completely wrap the cross in the duct tape making sure to keep it even. And make sure you have an extra 2" on the front and the back of the base of the cross to anchor it into the base.

Step Six

Place a piece of duct tape on each side to secure the bottom to the base of the monument and completely cover with duct tape remembering to keep it uniform. Repeat the same for the top of the base.

Step Seven

Cut a small slit to the size of the base of the cross into the top side of the base of the monument and insert the cross base and spread open the flaps inside the base and duct tape them to secure the cross. Then duct tape the top of the monument base untill the cross is secure and does not move.

Now the monument should be completely covered with Duct tape and ready for the next step.

Step Eight

I like to use this but just about any tile adhesive will do.

Using a putty knife or spatula, put a skim coat of adhesive onto the entire monument (except the bottom). This is done to use as a base because the paint will not stick to the duct tape surface and also to give the appearance of stone. Let dry overnight.

Step Nine

Lightly sand the entire monument to smooth it out. But remember if you want it to look old and weathered don't make it too smooth!

In a very well ventilated area, spray one coat of grey primer onto the entire monument.

Once it is dry, It will be ready for a coat of white paint. The reason that I used a grey base coat for the primer is that it will show through a light coat of white to make it appear like marble.

Step Ten

Now you are ready to spray a light coat of white paint over the entire monument. Don't make the coat too thick as you want some of the grey primer to bleed through!

Step Eleven

Once the white paint has dried, you are ready for the moss effect! This is done by using a rag sprayed with a small amount of green paint! Just dab the cloth lightly on the monument to create the illusion of Moss on Marble.

A weathered, mossy monument!

Finishing Touches

I like to add some dead grass along the base on the bottom and sides of the monument. I also like to add dead vines and spiral them around the cross.

A more detailed CD Rom is available. It has more pictures and more detailed step by step instructions. E-mail me for the price and where to send it. Also E-mail me if you are interested in purchasing finished monuments! These are great for displays!
